Instaling and maintaining a home wind turbine

This is the last post, I talked in previous posts about home wind turbines, what are their components, how to install one, their costs and types as well, and in this post, I will talk briefly about maintaining a home wind turbine and its permanent monitoring and what are the times when all these repairs must be done to avoid its breakdown.

Maintenance of a home wind turbine 

The average lifespan of a domestic wind turbine is between 10 and 20 years old. Of course, this can be considerably reduced or increased according to the maintenance, even if it remains undemanding in the matter. The elements that compose it being constructed in such a way as to resist to the vagaries of the weather, and safety devices being implemented to protect them in strong winds, thorough checking and cleaning annuals are usually sufficient.

On the other hand, the slightest sign of weakness, such as a suspicious noise, forces you to careful checking. Indeed, a faulty element could cause problems cascading to other parts of the home wind turbine.Finally, after very strong winds, or even a storm, a check-up is essential to ensure that the wind turbine has not been damaged.

What kind of maintenance does a home wind turbine require?

1.Regular maintenance

A wind turbine requires little maintenance and has a lifespan of 10 at 20 years old, or even older if you take care of it. Generally, keep clean the various components and check their condition once.

2.First Month of installation

  1. Do not use the turbine if you are not at home in order to avoid damage to the turbine when a hurricane blows or when the wind is blowing at high speed, and you can install a tracker on it so that it stops automatically when the wind speed exceeds a certain limit.
  2. Control your machine regularly, including monitoring power output, etc.
  3. Listen to the strange sounds that the turbine makes to know the mechanical condition and inhale the strange smells to know if there are burns in the cables or a lack of lubrication that leads to an increase in the temperature of the rotating elements, and observe the strange behavior in general.
  4. Check the cable pulling the turbine to the ground weekly for how many kinks in the event you have a vertical turbine attached to the ground, disconnect it from the base of the tower, loosen the wires, and reconnect it. This will give you some indication of how often you will need to check this in the future because if you find it has expanded or contracted it indicates that the turbine is swinging from side to side.
  5. After a month or two after installing the turbine, lower the tower and check everything, including the tension cable ties, clamps, and cable clamps. Check all screws on the turbine itself and retighten if necessary.

2.After 6 months

  1. re-tighten all the bolts and nuts that hold together the blades and alternator.
  2. If you used flaxseed oil to end the blades and tail, re-apply it in another thick coat or two.
  3. Check all guy wire anchors, turnbuckles, and cable clamps.
