The movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical In the Heights is finally here, and it’s filled to the brim with countless numbers that showcase Washington Heights and the extremely talented cast. The film – which is currently streaming on HBO Max and playing in theaters – has a running time of about 143 minutes, but we promise you won’t want to miss a single second. In fact, you’ll actually want to stay through the entire credits for a fun little addition.
The film has a bonus performance that fans of the original musical will certainly appreciate. Though a handful of tracks were cut from the movie – including “Inútil” and “Enough” – we do get to see Miranda perform “Piragua (Reprise)” at the very end. After feuding with Christopher Jackson’s character over their businesses, Miranda’s character gets the last laugh when the Mister Softee truck breaks down and everyone runs to his piragua stand.
It’s certainly a sweet little moment as Miranda and Jackson both starred in the original production of In the Heights – Miranda originated the role of Usnavi (played by Anthony Ramos in the film), while Jackson originated the role of Benny (played by Corey Hawkins in the film). Of course, after sharing the stage together for In the Heights in 2009, they eventually reunited for Miranda’s hit musical Hamilton in 2015, where Miranda played the title character of Alexander Hamilton and Jackson played George Washington.
