Over 100 Republicans, including former officials, threaten to split from G.O.P. : politics

You misunderstand. They’re still Republicans, they still want everything the Republicans want, they just don’t want everyone to act crazy about it! Romney, Cheney, etc still don’t want stimulus for the poor and middle class (stimulus for rich people is just fine), police reform, better healthcare, environmental change, etc. There’s a reason why when Romney announced his plan for tax benefits for children Democrats gave him everything he asked for and more, and Romney STILL VOTED AGAINST IT!

The old GOP was actually two parties, One minor part was the tax cut for the rich, give money to the rich, hate the poor party, while the majority was the culture war party. The GOP leaders would always exploit the culture war party into voting for them, get their tax cuts and corporate welfare, then always barely lose the culture war. They did this so that culture war Republicans would vote for them, but also because they could horse-trade culture war issues for corporate issues. The dirty secret of the Republican Party was that nobody liked the corporate welfare politicians, but the leaders knew that they could exploit whatever culture war issues to win the corporate welfare issues.

The problem now is that those culture-war people are now taking over the Republican party. They don’t realize that the culture wars were just excuses to pass pro-corporate policies, and they probably themselves hate Bill GatesFat Cats in Washingtonetc that the corporate welfare politicians pass.

Romney, Cheney, etc can’t go to the Democrats because they don’t WANT Democratic policies, they just want the corporate welfare of the past! There is also the fear that if the culture war Republicans find out that government policy can actually HELP THEM, they might be for better government policy as well and join the Democrats.
