If you actually read the article, it’s a fucking stupid idea designed to benefit the police departments.
Why? Because they’re trying to shift the blame for screening from the police departments themselves (where it belongs) to the candidate. This is just one more cover-your-back laws that results in less opportunity for the public to go after the police department.
Currently, if a police officer is fired and then rehired and and an incident occurs, it’s the department’s fault for negligently hiring and/or screening.
With the new law? Well, now it’s illegal for a fired PD officer to work elsewhere in NYS. This tries to avoid the problem altogether, but the elephant in the room is that bad officers are going to try to cover up any previous firings. If a department fails to screen an applicant and that officer then commits a crime, the department can claim “but they lied to us” and then use that to switch blame.
I mean, if a police officer was fired for inappropriate behavior or was put on administrative leave and quit…. why would you hire them in the first place? That is truly the question that should be asked here. If it truly is so obvious that it needs a law, who the hell was going against common sense and hiring these officers to begin with? THE SAME PEOPLE ADVOCATING FOR THE LAW. The guys telling you that you need the law were the same guys hiring these bad cops.
95% of passed laws benefit the richest 5% of the populace. This is no different.
